About Us
Humane Society of Western Montana FAQ's
- Where are you located? We are located at 5930 Hwy 93 South, 8/10th of a mile past Blue Mountain Road. Our driveway is in between Five Valley Honda and Animal Blessings Veterinary Hospital.
- What are your hours? We are open Tuesday through Friday from 1-6 pm and Saturdays from 11-4 pm. We are closed Sundays, Mondays and major holidays.
- What is your mission statement? To provide a safe, compassionate shelter for pets in need, place these animals into loving, lifelong homes and advocate for the welfare of all companion pets.
- How long do you keep the animals? We guarantee the placement of all adoptable animals regardless of age, beauty or how long the pet has been with us. Our adoption rate in 2010 was 98.1%. Animals spend anywhere from a few days to a few months here before they are adopted. We also have a great foster program, dog training and volunteer program for pets need more help to find their new home.
- What kind of animals do you take? We are a full-service shelter that provides care for pets in western Montana. Follow this link if you need to surrender a pet.
- Does it cost money to bring in an animal? We ask for a $25 donation to surrender an owned animal, and while there is no cost to bring in a stray, we do accept donations. We are non-profit and receive no funding from HSUS or the city/county. Donations are how we keep our doors open.
- What does your adoption include? Adoptions include basic vaccinations, spay/neuter surgery, collar and tag, leash (dog), carrier (cat), a free post-adoption check-up (thanks to area veterinarians), information on how to help your new pet adjust to a new household, a starter bag of Science Diet food, a cat or dog adjustment DVD.
- How much does it cost to adopt? The fee is $50 to adopt a spayed/neutered cat, $100 for a kitten, $90 for a dog and $125 for a puppy. All Humane Society animals must be spayed or neutered prior to adoption.
- How are you different than Animal Control and the Humane Society? The Humane Society of Western Montana is an independent, non-profit organization. We accept stray, owned or abandoned pets. We are governed by our members and Board of Directors. Missoula City-County Animal Control is supported by tax dollars and government funds. They are responsible for picking up stray dog and cats, for following up on animal related complaints and abuse cases in Missoula County, and for conducting the pet census. They also can take in any stray, owned, and abandoned animals as long as they are from Missoula County.
- What services do you offer? We offer private cremations, lost/found services, microchipping, low-cost spay/neuters (as grants allow), a pet food bank, dog training classes, a behavior helpline, spay and neuter clinics and much more.
- How long does it take to adopt an animal? We ask that you spend time with the pet to make sure that its personality matches what you are looking for. We also ask that resident dogs meet the potential new family member. The time involved varies from family to family. The adoption itself usually takes about 45 minutes.
