13th Annual Ken Shughart Award Nominations

Do you know someone in the community who performed extraordinary acts of kindness or raised awareness about companion animal welfare for the benefit of animals in 2009? The Humane Society of Western Montana is calling for nominations in the adult, junior (ages 6-10) and youth (ages 11-15) categories for 2010.

 

To nominate someone, send a letter to:  HSWM Ken Shughart Humanitarian Award Nominating Committee, 5930 Hwy 93 South, Missoula, MT  59804 or send an email to director@myhswm.org.  All nominations must be postmarked by February 19, 2010 to be eligible.

 

Winners will be acknowledged at our 13th Annual Ken Shughart Humanitarian Award and Auction on Saturday, April 17th 2010 at the Holiday Inn Downtown at the Park. Come join us! The evening will include dinner, a no-host bar, silent and live auction items, a donation dog and more.

 

Ken Shughart, who was a moving force in animal welfare, past president of the Humane Society board, and lover of ‘small, stepped-on beasts of the world,’ especially cats, died in 1997. We are proud to memorialize his ‘calm, forthright, altruistic influence that spread across our little island of earth here in Missoula.’

December 9~ Hoops For Hounds, 7 pm

Join HSWM volunteers and hounds for the halftime show at the Lady Griz game vs. Montana-Western on Wednesday, December 9th.  This is a great opportunity to meet community members, promote the shelter and find new homes for our dogs.  Please email Mariah to volunteer for this exciting event.

 

December 12~ Holiday Open House, 11-4 pm

Join us Saturday, December 12 for our annual holiday open house.  Chat with HSWM staff and socialize with the animals as we say 'thank you' to a great year of adoptions and helping homeless animals.  Check out our wish list for suggested donation items.

November 27~ $20 cat adoptions all day!

All adult cats 1 year and older will be available for adoption for just $20 from 1-6 pm.  All adoptions come with a collar, id tag, cardboard carrier, 4# bag of Science Diet food, free first vet visit, adoption packet and training DVD.  All cats adopted from HSWM are current on vaccinations and tested for feline leukemia.

November 14- PetSmart Offsite Adoption Event

Visit us at PetSmart on Saturday, November 14 from 10-4 to adopt your next family member.  Cat and kitten adoptions from PetSmart will be discounted to $30 per animal for the day.  PetSmart Charities will also donate an additional $25 to HSWM for each adoption that takes place during the event.

As always, HSWM animals are already spayed or neutered and current on vaccinations.  Each adoption comes with a starter bag of food, collar and id tag, cardboard carrier (cats), leash (dogs), free first vet visit, a training DVD, and great information on making a smooth transition with your new pet.  Email Mariah for more information or to volunteer for this event.

 

November 14 and 15~ Santa Paws Photos

Join us for HSWM's annual Santa Paws fundraiser at Southgate Mall.  Saturday, November 14 from 11-7 and Sunday, November 15 from 11-4.  Pose with your pets and Santa for the perfect holiday card and support HSWM programs and animals at the same time.  Sitting and two 5x7 photos for $20.  Additional $5 for a cd- perfect for creating your own holiday card!  New this year, pre-pay for your photos at www.firstgiving.com/hswm.

Sunday, October 4th - First Annual "Canine Classic at Paws Up"

The Resort at Paws Up in Greenough, Montana will be hosting the first annual "Canine Classic at Paws Up."  Participants can hike the beautiful trails on the grounds of the Resort at Paws Up with their canine companions and then stay for a BBQ lunch.  Prizes will be awarded for the individuals collecting the most in pledges and sponsorships.  Registration is $40 per person/pet, or registration fee is waived for participants collecting at least $100 in pledges.

Sunday, October 11~ 'Rescues & Runways' Fashion Show and silent auction

The ASPCA (The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) and Maurices have teamed up for Rescues & Runways, a national campaign to promote local Humane Societies.  Drop off a donation from our wishlist at Maurices in Southgate Mall (through September 30) and receive a coupon for 20% off at Maurices. 

 

Check out adoptable dogs and the latest fashions at The Rescues & Runways fashion show on October 11th at 2 pm, at the Maurices store (near Dillards).  Throughout the day bid on great pet related items and other local donations at the silent auction.  100% of the proceeds will be donated to HSWM and the animals.

Love Halloween?  Check out Terror on 36th Street, an awesome Haunted House with a portion of all proceeds benefiting HSWM!  Open Thursday 10/29 6-9 pm, Friday 10/30 and 31st 6-10 pm.  $3 entry fee at 2101 36th Street.  Free for children under 8 years old and younger kids can enjoy boo-tacular childrens section including games and prizes!

Attend the Missoula Osprey game and support HSWM at the same time!  Purchase tickets to either game from HSWM for only $8 and then help HSWM raise even more money during the 50/50 raffle during the games. Tickets must be purchased from the shelter or at the HSWM table at the Clark Fork Market.  Call 549-3934 or email Mariah for more information or to help out during the event.

Help promote the importance of providing a smoke-free home for your pets at 'Wag Not Drag'.  This event is sponsored by the Curry Health Center and will take place from 10-2 on the UM Oval.  Meet adoptable HSWM dogs, win prizes and learn about dog training, volunteering or other programs offered by HSWM.

July 17 and 18, 11-4 pm ~ Offsite adoptions at Macy's

Adopt your new family member from Macy's in downtown Missoula!  All adoption fees (kittesn, puppies and adults) will be only $20 or free with an unopened pet food donation (20-40# dry Science Diet or case of canned Science Diet food preferred).  We'll also be offering specials on microchipping and great adopter gift bags.

 

July 14-17 ~ Critter Camp - Marmaduke camp (ages 10-12)

                   This session has one spot available .

 

This day camp will help children build a sense of kindness, respect and responsibility for animals and life. Activities include caring for dogs and cats by feeding, training, grooming and playing with adoptable animals. Campers participate in educational animal-related games, activities and art projects while making new friends, two-legged and four-legged!  Guest speakers include Great Bear Foundation, Working Dogs for Conservation and presentations on horses, guide dogs and more!


Each session is $145 and includes all supplies, snacks and a t-shirt.

Drop off is between 8:30-9 am and pick up is between 3:30-4 pm.

Campers are responsible for bringing their own bag lunch daily.

Here are the 'Scratching Butterflies', the second session of HSWM's Critter Campers.  They raised over $40 in dog biscuit sales and donated the money to purchasing supplies for our HOPE foster program.  Great job everyone!

Meet HSWM's first week of Critter Campers- the 'Barking Rams'!  They made over $85 from selling their homemade dog treats at the Clark Fork market and decided to use thier profits to purchase enrichment toys and supplies for HSWM dogs and cats.  Thank you Barking Rams!

Celebrate 'Adopt A Shelter Cat Month' with HSWM!

Adopt any cat over the age of 1 year and receive $25 off the $60 adoption fee.  Pairs of adult cats will also be $25 off for the entire month of June.  Whether you have kids, dogs or other cats, we'll help you find the perfect companion for you and your family.  Meet with one of our experienced adoption specialists anytime Tue-Sat from noon to 5 pm.  Check back soon for extended summer adoption hours!  

 

Every Saturday and Sunday in June and July ~ Offsite adoptions at PetSmart

Find us at PetSmart every weekend from 10-4 pm to adopt kittens for half price!  That's $30 for a single kitten or $60 for a pair.  As usual, all of our kittens are current on vaccinations, tested for feline leukemia and already spayed or neutered.  Each kitten adoption comes with a starter bag of Hills Science Diet food, adoption packet, training DVD, free first vet visit, collar, id tag, cardboard carrier and reusable tote bag.

June 27, 10am-12 pm~ UM Social Work Program dog walk

Walk your own dog or volunteer to take an HSWM dog from Caras Park to the Bark Park.  Proceeds from raffle tickets and pet food donations donated to HSWM's pet food bank and the Missoula Food Bank.  Contact Mariah for more information or to walk a shelter dog.

May 9 ~Wild Fest and the Wild Walk Parade!

Come celebrate wildlife and the natural world with us at Wild Fest from 12:00-3:00pm, Caras Park Pavilion.

HSWM will also be marching in the Wild Walk parade on May 9th at 11 am.  The theme is "Howl at the Moon!" Come to the shelter on Sundays April 26 and May 3 from 1-3:30 pm to make a sign and create a costume. We'll have paints and supplies, but please bring any costume ideas and additional art supplies you may need.
