5k/1-mile Fun Run/Walk benefitting Missoula Animal Control. 1-4pm at McCormick Park. Race starts at 2pm. Register by April 29 at www.active.com. Saturday, October 29, Free Pet Behavior Workshop, 12-1 pm
Is Your Best Friend Bored?
Turn trash into treasure for your cat or dog! In this workshop you will learn how to keep your pet happy indoors this winter and how to make engaging interactive toys from household items. You'll make your own toy to take home to your pet and receive a coupon for discounts on interactive toys from our Re-Tail store. November 1-15~ "Neu-ter-U" Used Book Sale
We are accepting gently used donations of books, cds and dvds now! Please, no magazines, encyclopedias or dictionaries. Thank you for helping us raise money for our spay/neuter fund! In 2011, we spent over $25,000 on spay/neuter services for the shelter, feral cats and low-income families needing assistance.
Shop for books, cds and dvds November 1-15, anytime the shelter is open, Tue-Fri from 1-6 pm and Saturday from noon-5 pm. All proceeds will go directly to our spay/neuter fund and be used to alter pets in the community, shelter dogs and cats and feral cats in our TNR (trap, neuter, return) program.

Beginning Saturday, January 14~ Free cat microchips!
Thanks to a generous donation from the Missoula Community Foundation, we are offering free microchips for cats for a limited time. Appointments are recommended but not required, limit of 2 free microchips per family. Additional chips are regularly priced at $30 each or $10 each for families who have adopted from the Humane Society of Western Montana. Microchips are a safe, permanent, painless way to protect your pets for a lifetime. They allow pets to be identified at shelters and vet clinics and increase the chance that your pets will be returned to you quickly. Adopt any senior pet (dogs and cats ages 7 and up) in the month of November and we'll waive your adoption fee! There are many reasons to consider adopting a senior pet (and seven is not very old for cats and many dogs anyway!) They're already trained and socialized and usually fit into a family with very little disruption. You'll also feel good knowing that you are giving an older pet a wonderful new life! Our 5th annual Adopt-A-Thon starts today with $14 cat adoptions and $41 dog adoptions! 14th Annual Ken Shughart Award Nominations
Do you know someone in the community who performed extraordinary acts of kindness or raised awareness about companion animal welfare for the benefit of animals in 2010? The Humane Society of Western Montana is calling for nominations in the adult and youth (ages 10-15) categories for 2011.
To nominate someone, send a letter to: Humane Society Ken Shughart Humanitarian Award Nominating Committee, 5930 Hwy 93 South, Missoula, MT 59804 or send an email to director@myhswm.org. All nominations must be postmarked by February 15, 2011 to be eligible.
Winners will be acknowledged at our 14th Annual Ken Shughart Humanitarian Award and Auction on Saturday, April 16th 2011 at the Doubletree Hotel Missoula Edgewater. Come join us! The evening will include dinner, a no-host bar, silent and live auction items, a donation dog and more.
Ken Shughart, who was a moving force in animal welfare, past president of the Humane Society board, and lover of ‘small, stepped-on beasts of the world,’ especially cats, died in 1997. We are proud to memorialize his ‘calm, forthright, altruistic influence that spread across our little island of earth here in Missoula.’

Check out seniors April and Sophie pictured here. They are a sweet, mellow pair who just need a new place to call home. They will fit easily into any family and seem to love everyone!
Adopt any senior pet (dogs and cats ages 7 and up) in the month of November and we'll waive your adoption fee! There are many reasons to consider adopting a senior pet (and seven is not very old for cats and many dogs anyway!) They're already trained and socialized and usually fit into a family with very little disruption. You'll also feel good knowing that you are giving an older pet a wonderful new life! Check out these great cat adoption specials for Black Friday! Adoption fees for cats one year and older will be just $10 and adoption fees on senior cats ages seven and older will be waived! Kittens under the age of one year will be half off- just $50! These adoption specials are good for all cats that are already spayed/neutered. We'll waive the adoption fee on any unaltered cats, but the adopter will be responsible for paying for the cost of the spay or neuter. October- Adopt A Dog Month!
Adopt a dog from the Humane Society in the month of October and receive a free microchip (registered for free with 24 PetWatch) and reusable tote bag (while supplies last). You will also be eligible to receive $25 off your adoption fee if you sign up for any of our dog training classes the day of your adoption. Classes include Basic Manners, Puppy Kindergarten and our Advanced/CGC Prep class.

Stop by Southgate Mall for a fashion show hosted by Maurices and the ASPCA featuring adoptable pets from the Humane Society. There will also be a silent auction with the proceeds donated to the Humane Society and the animals. Last year, over $550 was raised and donated to the animals!

13th Annual Ken Shughart Award Nominations
Do you know someone in the community who performed extraordinary acts of kindness or raised awareness about companion animal welfare for the benefit of animals in 2009? The Humane Society of Western Montana is calling for nominations in the adult, junior (ages 6-10) and youth (ages 11-15) categories for 2010.
To nominate someone, send a letter to: HSWM Ken Shughart Humanitarian Award Nominating Committee, 5930 Hwy 93 South, Missoula, MT 59804 or send an email to director@myhswm.org. All nominations must be postmarked by February 19, 2010 to be eligible.
Winners will be acknowledged at our 13th Annual Ken Shughart Humanitarian Award and Auction on Saturday, April 17th 2010 at the Holiday Inn Downtown at the Park. Come join us! The evening will include dinner, a no-host bar, silent and live auction items, a donation dog and more.
Ken Shughart, who was a moving force in animal welfare, past president of the Humane Society board, and lover of ‘small, stepped-on beasts of the world,’ especially cats, died in 1997. We are proud to memorialize his ‘calm, forthright, altruistic influence that spread across our little island of earth here in Missoula.’

Over 1,300 pounds of pet food and supplies were donated to HSWM by St.Joseph's school! The food collection started as their seventh grade service project, but quickly became bigger than they expected. In just a few weeks, the girls had pitched their project to every class in the school and turned it into a contest. Who could collect the most pet food and supplies in just a few weeks? The contest was open to grades K-8- with the winning class to receive a pizza party, sponsored by their school! Thank you to teachers, students and parents at St. Joseph's school for giving so many homeless animals good food, new toys and treats and a lot of love.

Saturday May 8 ~Wildfest and the Wild Walk Parade!
Come celebrate wildlife and the natural world with us at Wildfest from 12:00-3:00 pm at the Caras Park Pavilion. The theme this year is "Wings and Fins and Things that Soar and Swim". Wildfest officially kicks of the International Wildlife Film Festival with live music, art and fun educational programs. This event is free to the public.

June
June is Adopt-a-cat month! Every Wednesday in June, we'll waive adoption fees on all cats over 7 years of age. Cats 1-7 years old will be half price- just $30. As always, all of our animals are spayed or neutered, vaccinated and ready to go. Every adoption comes with a colllar, id tag, training DVD, adoption packet and leash (dogs) or cardboard carrier (cats).

Find your new bestfriend at our offsite adoption event at Quality Supply on West Broadway. We'll be offering special adoption rates and as always, all of our pets will already be spayed or neutered and current on vaccinations. In additon, each adoption comes with a training DVD, collar and id tag, adopter packet, free first vet visit and a leash (for dogs) or cardboard carrier (for cats). Call HSWM on June 18 to see what pets will be attending the event!

This day camp will help children build a sense of kindness, respect and responsibility for animals and life. Activities include caring for dogs and cats by feeding, training, grooming and socializing with adoptable animals. Campers participate in educational animal-related games, activities and art projects while making new friends, two-legged and four-legged! Each week hosts guest speakers from different animal organizations within the community including presentations on horses, guide dogs, dog agility and more!
Each session is $145 and includes all supplies and a t-shirt.
Drop off is between 8:30-9 am and pick up is between 3:30-4 pm.
Campers are responsible for bringing two snacks their own bag lunch each day.

Find your new best friend at Petsmart from 11-4 pm. We'll have adoptable kittens, adult cats and even puppies (until they're adopted). Kitten adoptions will be half-price and we'll even waive the adoption fees on all adult cats. Call the shelter to see who will be there or just show up to meet the available animals. As always, everyone will be current on vaccinations, spayed or neutered and come with a great adoption gift pack including food, leash or carrier, collar, id tag, free first vet visit and more! Join us at Caras Park for Petfest! We'll have pets available for adoption and special adoption fees during the event. Adoption fees on adult cats over the age of one will be waived and kitten adoptions will be discounted as well! A humane society staff member will be available to microchip all dogs and cats for just $10 per animal during the event.
