Saturday, August 21~ Petfest, 11-5 pm
Join us at Caras Park for Petfest! We'll have pets available for adoption and special adoption fees during the event. Adoption fees on adult cats over the age of one will be waived and kitten adoptions will be discounted as well! A humane society staff member will be available to microchip all dogs and cats for just $10 per animal during the event. While supplies last we'll even have free balloons and coloring books for the kids! Email Mariah for more information or to find out what animals are going to Petfest.

Saturday, September 11~ Offsite adoption event
Find your new best friend at Petsmart from 11-4 pm. We'll be bringing cats, kittens and dogs (puppies too if we have any!) and will have special adoption fees for everyone during this event. Adoption fees will be waived on all adult cats over the age of one and we'll have special rates for kittens as well. A Humane Society staff member will be available to microchip dogs and cats for just $10 per animal during the event. Sunday, September 12~ Sunday Streets Missoula
Visit the Humane Society table from 9-2 during this exciting new event to be held in downtown Missoula. Our behaviorist will be available to answer all your pet behavior questions like "Why does my cat pee on on my bathroom towels?" or 'How can I get my dog to stop barking at my cat?" You can also practice or learn about how to train your dog in 5 minutes with a Certified Pet Dog Trainer! Check out the Sunday Streets Missoula website for more information.

Saturday, October 2~ Rescues and Runways
Stop by Southgate Mall for a fashion show hosted by Maurices and the ASPCA featuring adoptable pets from the Humane Society. There will also be a silent auction with the proceeds donated to the Humane Society and the animals. Last year, $550 was raised and donated to the animals! 13th Annual Ken Shughart Award Nominations
Do you know someone in the community who performed extraordinary acts of kindness or raised awareness about companion animal welfare for the benefit of animals in 2009? The Humane Society of Western Montana is calling for nominations in the adult, junior (ages 6-10) and youth (ages 11-15) categories for 2010.
To nominate someone, send a letter to: HSWM Ken Shughart Humanitarian Award Nominating Committee, 5930 Hwy 93 South, Missoula, MT 59804 or send an email to director@myhswm.org. All nominations must be postmarked by February 19, 2010 to be eligible.
Winners will be acknowledged at our 13th Annual Ken Shughart Humanitarian Award and Auction on Saturday, April 17th 2010 at the Holiday Inn Downtown at the Park. Come join us! The evening will include dinner, a no-host bar, silent and live auction items, a donation dog and more.
Ken Shughart, who was a moving force in animal welfare, past president of the Humane Society board, and lover of ‘small, stepped-on beasts of the world,’ especially cats, died in 1997. We are proud to memorialize his ‘calm, forthright, altruistic influence that spread across our little island of earth here in Missoula.’

Over 1,300 pounds of pet food and supplies were donated to HSWM by St.Joseph's school! The food collection started as their seventh grade service project, but quickly became bigger than they expected. In just a few weeks, the girls had pitched their project to every class in the school and turned it into a contest. Who could collect the most pet food and supplies in just a few weeks? The contest was open to grades K-8- with the winning class to receive a pizza party, sponsored by their school! Thank you to teachers, students and parents at St. Joseph's school for giving so many homeless animals good food, new toys and treats and a lot of love.

Saturday May 8 ~Wildfest and the Wild Walk Parade!
Come celebrate wildlife and the natural world with us at Wildfest from 12:00-3:00 pm at the Caras Park Pavilion. The theme this year is "Wings and Fins and Things that Soar and Swim". Wildfest officially kicks of the International Wildlife Film Festival with live music, art and fun educational programs. This event is free to the public.

June
June is Adopt-a-cat month! Every Wednesday in June, we'll waive adoption fees on all cats over 7 years of age. Cats 1-7 years old will be half price- just $30. As always, all of our animals are spayed or neutered, vaccinated and ready to go. Every adoption comes with a colllar, id tag, training DVD, adoption packet and leash (dogs) or cardboard carrier (cats).

This day camp will help children build a sense of kindness, respect and responsibility for animals and life. Activities include caring for dogs and cats by feeding, training, grooming and socializing with adoptable animals. Campers participate in educational animal-related games, activities and art projects while making new friends, two-legged and four-legged! Each week hosts guest speakers from different animal organizations within the community including presentations on horses, guide dogs, dog agility and more!
Each session is $145 and includes all supplies and a t-shirt.
Drop off is between 8:30-9 am and pick up is between 3:30-4 pm.
Campers are responsible for bringing two snacks their own bag lunch each day.

Join HSWM volunteers and hounds for the halftime show at the Lady Griz game vs. Montana-Western on Wednesday, December 9th. This is a great opportunity to meet community members, promote the shelter and find new homes for our dogs. Please email Mariah to volunteer for this exciting event.

Join us Saturday, December 12 for our annual holiday open house. Chat with HSWM staff and socialize with the animals as we say 'thank you' to a great year of adoptions and helping homeless animals. Check out our wish list for suggested donation items.

November 27~ $20 cat adoptions all day!
All adult cats 1 year and older will be available for adoption for just $20 from 1-6 pm. All adoptions come with a collar, id tag, cardboard carrier, 4# bag of Science Diet food, free first vet visit, adoption packet and training DVD. All cats adopted from HSWM are current on vaccinations and tested for feline leukemia.

November 14- PetSmart Offsite Adoption Event
Visit us at PetSmart on Saturday, November 14 from 10-4 to adopt your next family member. Cat and kitten adoptions from PetSmart will be discounted to $30 per animal for the day. PetSmart Charities will also donate an additional $25 to HSWM for each adoption that takes place during the event.
As always, HSWM animals are already spayed or neutered and current on vaccinations. Each adoption comes with a starter bag of food, collar and id tag, cardboard carrier (cats), leash (dogs), free first vet visit, a training DVD, and great information on making a smooth transition with your new pet. Join us for HSWM's annual Santa Paws fundraiser at Southgate Mall. Saturday, November 14 from 11-7 and Sunday, November 15 from 11-4. Sunday, October 4th - First Annual "Canine Classic at Paws Up"
The Resort at Paws Up in Greenough, Montana will be hosting the first annual "Canine Classic at Paws Up." Participants can hike the beautiful trails on the grounds of the Resort at Paws Up with their canine companions and then stay for a BBQ lunch. Prizes will be awarded for the individuals collecting the most in pledges and sponsorships. Registration is $40 per person/pet, or registration fee is waived for participants collecting at least $100 in pledges.

Sunday, October 11~ 'Rescues & Runways' Fashion Show and silent auction
The ASPCA (The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) and Maurices have teamed up for Rescues & Runways, a national campaign to promote local Humane Societies. Drop off a donation from our wishlist at Maurices in Southgate Mall (through September 30) and receive a coupon for 20% off at Maurices.
Check out adoptable dogs and the latest fashions at The Rescues & Runways fashion show on October 11th at 2 pm, at the Maurices store (near Dillards). Throughout the day bid on great pet related items and other local donations at the silent auction. 100% of the proceeds will be donated to HSWM and the animals.

Wednesday, September 30~ 'Wag Not Drag' Event
Help promote the importance of providing a smoke-free home for your pets at 'Wag Not Drag'. This event is sponsored by the Curry Health Center and will take place from 10-2 on the UM Oval. Meet adoptable HSWM dogs, win prizes and learn about dog training, volunteering or other programs offered by HSWM.
