And the winners are...
2012 Ken Shughart Award
The 2012 Ken Shughart Award Recipient is Jani Zirbel, DVM for the difference she has made in the lives of animals. She works tirelessly for animals in Missoula, Great Falls and in Virginia (her home state), going so far above and beyond her job as a veterinarian. She routinely brings back animals from other cities that can be rehabilitated and adopted—for example, she recently brought back a cat who was going to be euthanized because of a urinary tract infection and a puppy with a broken leg. She is one of our regular veterinarians for our monthly low-income spay/neuter clinics and offers to neuter male Humane Society kittens/cats at any time at no charge. Her fees are always at a reduced rate and she typically donates many exams and surgeries (last week she donated surgery to remove the eye from a kitten named Tader); this allows us to provide top-notch care for over 1000 pets/year. Dr. Zirbel always makes time for area shelters, whether it’s 5pm on a Friday with a room full of clients or on a Sunday afternoon via her cell phone. She frequently helps out other animal organizations, like Animal Control and Animeals. She gives her clients her cell phone number so they can call her, s he houses special needs pets at her veterinary clinic, and even conducts fundraising campaigns to support expensive treatments when necessary.
Dr. Zirbel sees many of the sick and injured pets who find themselves at the Humane Society and other shelters, and she treats them all with compassion. We are honored to recognize Dr. Zirbel for all she does for animal welfare organizations and their human and non human beneficiaries. Congratulations, Dr. Zirbel!
2012 Ken Shughart Youth Award

The Ken Shughart Youth Award Recipient is 9-year old Crystal Dykstra, for all her work fostering puppies and kittens for the Humane Society. She was responsible for the majority of their care and socialization in her home. She learned how to feed and housetrain them and taught them how great humans can be. One night, a litter of puppies broke through the babygate and they were found sleeping with Crystal! She was instrumental in helping Kelly, a mom dog from the Wibaux hoarding case, trust humans. After all the puppies were adopted, Crystal took it upon herself to write an ad on Craigslist about Kelly, the mom dog, hoping someone would adopt her. This ad resulted in a call, and Kelly’s adoption! Crystal hopes to be a veterinarian so she can help as many animals as possible in the future. Congratulations, Crystal!
