Microchipping Information
The Humane Society of Western Montana offers microchipping for any cat or dog, in addition to those pets adopted from HSWM. The cost is only $10 per pet for HSWM adopters (including all pets in their family) and $20 for all others. Microchipping can be done anytime the shelter is open, Tuesday-Friday from 1-6 pm and Saturdays from 11-4 pm.
Please leave your animals in your car while you fill out paperwork and the staff prepares a room for you. For even faster service, call the shelter at 549-HSWM to make an appointment.

Microchipping FAQs
Microchips are a safe, permanent and painless way of protecting your pet for a lifetime. They allow lost pets to be identified at shelters and vet clinics and increase the chance that your pet will be quickly returned to you quickly
What is a microchip? A microchip is a transponder (about the size of a grain of rice), that has a unique number embedded in it.
How is it implanted in my pet? The microchip is inserted using a needle between the shoulder blades of dogs and cats.
Does it hurt my pet? It is a relatively painless procedure, similar to receiving a vaccination.
Why do I want to microchip my pet?
- Owners are concerned that their pet might become lost and want to have something more than just a collar and tag as a form of identification.
- We want to improve the chance of lost pets being reunited.
- We want to help track those pets that are adopted should they re-enter the shelter community.
What makes a microchip system work properly? There are three essential components to an effective microchip system:
-
The microchip has a number embedded into it.
-
The scanner is used to read the number on the microchip which has been implanted.
-
The database network, where your information can be stored or registered, is tied directly to your pet's microchip number.
Is there a registration fee once my pet is microchipped?
24PetWatch charges a small fee annually or when you need to update your address or information. 24PetWatch also accepts registration of pets that have a competitor's chip implanted if that pet owner's clinic or shelter has subsequently begun buying 24PetWatch microchips. They also maintain contact with you at least once every 11 months.
What if I move? Can I change my information? They encourage you to advise them of any changes to your or your pet's information.
Can this microchip be read by other scanners? Yes, 24PetWatch can be universally read by other scanners.
How long do they last? The chip should last a lifetime, but it is recommended to check it once a year.
What are the dangers of microchipping? Possible complications include bleeding, infection or swelling.
Why is it less expensive than at my veterinarian's office? 24PetWatch is available to shelters at a low fee, and we can pass these savings on to you.
Can I hold my pet during the procedure? We have trained staff to hold your pet while others are available to answer any questions you may have about microchipping. This method is less stressful for both you and your pet.
