Trap-Neuter-Return
Trap-Neuter-Return is a feral cat program designed to reduce the stray and feral cat populations within a community. TNR is widely accepted by humane organizations, scientists and community members as the most humane and effective way of managing and reducing feral cat populations. Visit Alley Cat Allies for more information or to learn more about the benefits of TNR.
The Humane Society of Western Montana offers a comprehensive TNR (Trap-Neuter-Return) program for feral cat colony caregivers. TNR is a humane, effective means of reducing free-roaming cat populations by removing adoptable cats (kittens and social adults) and spaying/neutering and returning the remainder of the feral colony.
Participation in our TNR program is free of charge, but we always accept donations to help continue this program. Acceptance into the TNR program includes the following:
- Free trap rental, demonstration and tips for successful trapping. (Volunteers may be available to help trap large colonies as available.)
- Spay/neuter appointments with a local veterinarian. All cats within the colony will also receive a rabies vaccination and ear tipping for identification purposes.
- All kittens and social adults will be placed into HSWM's adoption program until they are either adopted into a new home or returned to the original colony.
- Barn homes may be available for relocation of some feral cats, although this is usually a last resort.
- Free cat food and pet supplies as available from our pet food bank.
